Professional legacy
Thomas Irions combined entrepreneurial discipline, technical curiosity and a commitment to community service throughout his career. Raised in Mishawaka, Indiana, after his family moved north from Alabama, he earned an associate degree in business and completed service in the Army National Guard. In 1977, Irions and Kelly Rose founded ASA Electronics with limited startup capital and a plan to reinvest profits to build a stable company.
ASA initially distributed mobile audiovisual products throughout the Midwest. Drawing on Irions’s experience in the van-conversion business, the company developed products for motorhome, travel-trailer and conversion-van manufacturers. Irions was largely self-taught in engineering and remained closely engaged with emerging technology. ASA hired engineers and began designing and branding its own electronics in 1986. The company introduced an early wired rear-view camera in 1987, pioneered flip-down and mobile LCD entertainment products, and later developed technology supporting streaming services.
In 2015, ASA introduced the in-Command Control System, enabling RV owners to manage lights, slideouts, awnings, tire-pressure monitoring, jacks and climate systems through an app. ASA also expanded beyond RVs into automotive, construction, trucking, marine and agricultural markets while owning or licensing brands including Jensen, Voyager, Advent, Klipsch, Polk, Jensen Heavy Duty and Jensen Marine.
Irions emphasized financial strength, employee retention and product diversification, helping ASA withstand changing markets without losing sight of its RV roots. His professional legacy also included extensive philanthropy. Through the Irions Foundation and service with the Community Foundation of Elkhart County, he supported education, youth development and local charities. His Hall of Fame induction honored nearly five decades of innovation, business leadership and service to the greater Elkhart community.
