Professional legacy
Kurt Kelly brought legal training, entrepreneurial judgment and a collaborative approach to the manufactured-housing insurance market. Raised in Weatherford, Oklahoma, he earned an undergraduate degree from the University of Colorado and a law degree from the University of Oklahoma. After practicing law for five years, Kelly changed careers in 1996 and joined Mobile Insurance, the company owned by his mother and stepfather.
He purchased the five-employee agency two years after they retired, became president and paid off the acquisition financing within a decade. Mobile Insurance grew into a national specialty agency serving manufactured-housing communities and dealer operations. Its coverage included inventory, vehicles, offices, contents, liability and community risks.
Kelly also co-founded the American Insurance Alliance, bringing specialty agencies together to demonstrate the industry’s scale and performance to major insurance carriers. Through that collaboration, Mobile Insurance grew from approximately $6 million to $100 million in written premium while helping expand insurance capacity across the manufactured-housing sector.
Kelly extended his influence through association and educational leadership. He served for eight years as president and chairman of the Texas Manufactured Housing Association and helped the organization navigate a severe economic downturn. He founded the TexCO conference for community owners and became publisher of Manufactured Housing Review, an electronic publication featuring perspectives from retailers, community owners, financial professionals, insurers and attorneys.
In 2020, the Manufactured Housing Association of Oklahoma presented him with the Sandy Goodman Award, its highest honor, recognizing his lifetime support of the industry. Kelly attributed his success to treating people respectfully, accepting responsibility for mistakes and protecting the reputation earned through honest service. His Hall of Fame induction recognized his role in strengthening the insurance infrastructure serving manufactured housing nationwide.
