Professional legacy
Steven Schaub devoted his career to expanding and improving professionally managed manufactured-housing communities. He entered the industry in 1994 as a regional manager with ROC Communities after working in the apartment sector. When ROC merged with Chateau Communities in 1996, Schaub became vice president of operations in southeastern Michigan, where he led development, home-sales and business-development efforts. He later became division president for National Community Development and managed properties across the country.
After Chateau was sold in 2003, Schaub joined former company leaders to form Basecamp Capital, a real-estate investment company. Basecamp’s investments included manufactured-housing communities and ultimately led to the creation of YES! Communities. Schaub co-founded YES!, initially serving as chief operating officer and later becoming president and CEO in 2017.
Under his leadership, the organization pursued a resident-focused model built around attainable homeownership, long-term community stability and a culture of saying yes to practical opportunities to improve residents’ lives. YES! helped families rent or purchase new and pre-owned manufactured homes while investing in community amenities, resident activities, sustainability programs and charitable initiatives.
Schaub also worked extensively to strengthen the broader industry. Through the Manufactured Housing Institute, he chaired the National Communities Council and supported advocacy, research, education, communications and ethical standards for land-lease community operators. He also served as vice chairman of the Urban Land Institute. MHI named him Manufactured Housing Leader of the Year in 2019, and he received the institute’s Chairman’s Award. That same year, Goldman Sachs included him among its 100 Most Intriguing Entrepreneurs. Schaub’s Hall of Fame induction recognized three decades of operational leadership, industry service and dedication to creating affordable, welcoming communities where residents could build better lives.
