Bill Poynter was remembered as a disciplined organizer, retailer and advocate for manufactured housing. Raised in Louisville, Kentucky, he became the first member of his family to attend college and continued his education in business and management. After early work with Ford and Chevrolet, he built industry experience at National Homes and Guerdon Industries, where he advanced to director of marketing.
When an ownership change at Guerdon threatened to relocate his work to Colorado during a difficult market, Poynter chose entrepreneurship. He and a colleague completed a market study and acquired manufactured-housing retail locations in Lexington, Richmond and London, Kentucky. The business operated under several names, including Great American Homes and Affordable Housing Mart, later shortened to Affordable Housing. A fourth location in Corbin expanded the company’s presence along the Interstate 75 corridor.
After his business partner died, Poynter continued the operation with his wife, Priscilla. During the repossession-heavy market of the 1990s, they acquired, refurbished and resold homes, sustaining the business while providing affordable housing to Kentucky families.
Poynter also gave significant time to industry governance. He served as president, vice president and treasurer of the Kentucky Manufactured Housing Institute and improved the association’s meeting structure to reduce members’ time away from their businesses. His service also included the Midwest Manufactured Housing Federation, committees of the Manufactured Housing Institute, and chairmanship of the Kentucky Manufactured Housing and Licensure Board.
Poynter received multiple Fleetwood Circle of Excellence honors and was inducted into the Manufactured Housing Institute Hall of Fame in 2005. After his death in November 2006, an MHI education wing was named in his honor. His RV/MH Hall of Fame induction recognized a career devoted to sound business practice, association leadership and attainable homeownership.
